The Hall was built in 1849 as the local primary school and functioned as such until 1896 when the new school located nearby was opened.
At this time the property was purchased by George Coats, Lord Glentanar, who lived close to the village on Belleisle Estate for use by the residents as what we now know as a Community Hall.
In 1922 ownership was transferred by the Coats family to Trustees and since that time the Hall has, under successive management committees, fulfilled its intended purpose and has been the focal point of social activities for the 2500 or so homes in the area.
Over the years many improvements to the property have been carried out. In 1929 the main hall was redesigned by Sir Robert Lorimer and plaster murals by Pilkington Jackson were installed above the oak wall panalling. With more recent improvements to the central heating and with new toilet facilities having been installed, Alloway Public Hall can claim to be the finest Village Hall in Scotland.
At the present time the facilites are used by 15 organisations on a regular basis embracing all age groups from toddlers to seniors and covering such interests as country dancing, ballet, badminton, short tennis, karate, keep-fit, crafts, music and art.
The Hall is available and is regularly used for children's parties, receptions, concerts, anniversaries and ceilidhs, thus fulfilling the wishes of Lord Glentanar when he purchased the property over 150 years ago.
